Pilot VR

   Pilot, a brand development company in Boston was looking for innovative ways to showcase their retail packaging designs. Traditionally, they physically compose each package from print and paper board. Although not as fantastic as building a holodeck on a starship, building a VR system that allows clients to hold designs in their hands would be very helpful. This demonstrates how technology typically reserved for the game industry can serve others. It turned out that watching executives from around the world don the head gear to interact with their brands was fantastic after all!

The Program

A Modular Retail Space

By far the most important part of the program was to create a modular retail environment that could properly represent many different IP's. This easly customizable retail space would give the illustrators at Pilot more time to work on the artwork for the space, rather then building the space itself. This was another thing I had to consider while working on the project. Many of these artists had never worked in 3d environments such as unreal engine. This was another reason to keep the environment clean, and easy to understand. Between creating an array of master materials that could be read and customized quickly,  I was able to train the creative team at pilot to understand the basics of Unreal Engine. This would really help the creative team at Pilot further develop their future retail spaces, as well as allowing them to further troubleshoot any problems they may run into.
